Personal Finance Presentations & Workshops

The “F A S T” presentation & workshop is the foundation of YourMoney101’s “Educate” program. Each letter stands for a word, a clue is provided, and the audience tries to guess the word. The person who correctly guesses the word gets to select from money and two personal finance books (The Index Card by Olen & Pollack and The Psychology of Money by Housel). There are 5 or 6 winners in all. Typically, two $10 or $20 bills along with 3 books are given away. Alternatively, all books can be given away if that is more appropriate for the audience. Personal experiences with money and other real-world examples are provided throughout the presentation. The audience is encouraged to ask questions at any time and going down a rabbit hole or two is fine if that is where the audience wants to go as questions often prompt more questions.

Topics Covered: The topics and the depth of information covered for each topic can be tailored based on the length of the workshop and the audience. Questions from the attendees also may dictate what and how much is covered in the allotted time.

  1. Why financial literacy and your personal finances matter
  2. The foundation of personal finance: “Keeping Score” – introduce and discuss the importance of keeping track of your money
  3. Spend for a Reason & Save for a Purpose
  4. Meet the “Haves”: Must, Need, & Nice
  5. What are debit and credit cards, how they work, and what makes them different
  6. What is & what you should know about Buy-Now-Pay-Later (BNPL)
  7. What are the key components of a credit score, and why a credit score matters
  8. Some Gotchas & Resources to consider
  9. Other topics based on the needs and interests of the audience

Intended Audience: Presentations and workshops are tailored to high school seniors, college-aged students, employees of nonprofit and for-profit organizations, and working adults and their families.

Intended Outcome: For some this will be an introduction to personal finance while others might have an “ah-ha” realization or two to be used immediately or tucked away for future use. Most important is that the attendee comes away with one or more of the following: “This is important and matters to me”; “I did not know that, and I learned something today”; “I need and want to learn more”; and/or “I can do this.”
